This film is part love story and part adventure. The entire cast does a great job, particularly McConaughey. It is slow at times, but the story is original and keeps your attention. It is a very understated, but very good movie.

"Mud" is astonishingly genuine, a film that leaks childhood nostalgia, the promise of adventure, and important truths about the realities of love and trust. From the mostly incredible cast to Jeff Nichols' ability to make this backwater town not just beautiful but so fully alive, "Mud" is a brilliant

Instantaneously, Mud brought me back to days past when my friend and I would explore the woods near my house. The woods were by no means deep, located closely to a golf-course and an apartment complex, but they were all that we had and we loved them. We'd be on the hunt for golf balls, and would often stumble upon such "treasures" as rubber tires, potpourri, cigarette butts, beer bottles, and broken glass. Upon finding them, we'd make up stories on how they got there, and often, if we had a sleepover, listen for teenagers, bums, or whoever may be out there in the middle of the night leaving such objects.

Unfortunately, our closeted adventures and theories never amounted to anything but spur-of-the-moment daydreams. If only we could've had an experience like the characters in Jeff Nichols' Mud, a fantastic drama centered on growing up in the deep south. And yet, such an oversimplification may lead potential viewers to think it's a story they've seen many times before, when really, the film's multiple angles allow it to be looked at and enjoyed in several different ways. This is, simply put, one of the best, most wonderful films of the year.

The story narrows in on the likes of Ellis (Tye Sheridan) and Neckbone (Jacob Lofland), two fourteen year olds hungering for adventure, girls, and excitement in their lives. Ellis lives with his miserable father and his unsatisfied mother, while Neckbone resides with his womanizing uncle. They discover on an island located distally from their home that there is a large boat stuck in a tree, housing food and pornographic magazines showing signs that someone lives there. That man, they find, is Mud (Matthew McConaughey), a fugitive housing a checkered past and now making due with little in the middle of nowhere, attempting to reconnect with his love Juniper (Reese Witherspoon).

The boys decide to help Mud reconnect with her and reside out in the middle of nowhere, until it becomes apparent that because the entire town is plastered with his pictures that he needs to get out. What unfolds is a beautiful tale of love, coming-of-age hardships, and family issues that result in a wholesome, gritty exercise that provides for numerous emotions to take fold.

One questions the motive of the boys to continue to help Mud, even after discovering what horror he committed. Because Ellis's parents are enduring hellish circumstances and losing love in one another, his commitment to helping Mud find Juniper seems stronger than Neckbone's because he doesn't want to see a couple who should be together remain distant. This is one of the many lenses you can see Mud through. The film is such a visceral, multi-layered experience that each person has the ability to find something different or subtly unique that lies within the story's seemingly direct roots.

Even after Nichols enthralling Take Shelter, which headlined Michael Shannon who is present in a small role here, he continues to have a growing fascination with skylines and the rural environment that his characters reside in. He seems to take a deep satisfaction in the presence of sleepy towns, beautiful, limitless skies, glowing sunlight, quickly-forming clouds, and the dustiness and wholesomeness of the south's environment. Scarcely has such a simple coming-of-age film achieved the beauty and majestic look that Mud effortlessly concocts.

Although it is not a tense, pulse-racing epic, the film still plays something like the kinds of "fugitive-on-the-loose" pictures you'd see from the early seventies. It still has that questionable uncertainty in its premise that allows it to be worthily thought of as the kind of film where the mystifying fugitive turns out to be something a bit more than a loser, but the way Nichols presents Mud is anything but the sappy sob-story we sort of expect.

And finally, Mud can be simply seen as a rural coming-of-age story, not far off from the likes of Rob Reiner's impeccable Stand By Me, which, too, centered on young kids become more unified because of a dangerous adventure. There's nothing wrong with looking at Mud simplistically, as a drama centered around early-teenagers, because even when you do that, you still get a wonderful, more-than-complete package with performances that are enriching and an adventure that's unbelievable. Matthew McConaughey, again, gives an astonishingly capable performance after coming off of the likes of the beautifully quirky Bernie, the unfairly-ostracized Magic Mike, and the haunting, yet enigmatic Killer Joe. It's safe to say that McConaughey has made enough money so that he can shy away from the pathetic romantic-comedy or dull actioneer in favor of riskier, more reclusive projects that test him as an actor. Teaming up with Jeff Nichols was certainly the right bet, as this is closest to the most perfect movie experiences I've had all year.

"Before Midnight" puts us in the same position with Jesse and Celine that they are in with each other. The romantic idealism has evaporated, and now we see them for who they are - real, deeply flawed, sometimes selfish people. Can we still love them?

The movie is a great romantic story because it bravely displays the downside of love in which two people can expose each other in the most personal fashion yet still remain committed.

Before Midnight is a beautiful reminder that a movie with nothing more than two people talking can have just as many explosions and fireworks as any high-tech summer blockbuster.

Before Midnight understands that when love falters it isn't with a bang but a long protracted sigh. It's a perceptive and humbling view of romance that debunks all notions of fairy tale endings.

"Before Midnight" presents a paradox: It's the best entry in director Richard Linklater's romantic trilogy, but it's also the first in the series that doesn't leave me dying to know what happens next.

It is immensely refreshing to meet again these two characters who we once (twice) learned to love, in a story that examines with the uttermost honesty the natural conflicts of married life, which are also present for this couple who seemed so suited for a happy ending together.

Before Midnight is a masterpiece. Plain and simple. It's the best film of this or any recent year, and it's also undoubtedly one of the most perceptive and insightful portrayals of middle age anxieties that I have seen in a very long time.

Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy reprise their roles as Jessie and Celine respectively. The budding romance of these two characters in Before Sunrise was a wonderfully unique tribute to young love. Nine years later, their brief real time conversation in Before Sunset reflected their fears and insecurities as they matured into adulthood. Now, in Before Midnight, with a family (or families) of their own, Jessie and Celine are still unsure about each other or about their aspirations for life.

Before Midnight is by far the funniest of the three films, but it is also the least optimistic. As the decades have passed, Jessie and Celine have grown older, but they are not that different from the twenty year old versions of themselves who met on that train in Vienna. Nevertheless, this is a beautifully written, directed, and acted stroke of film brilliance that adds that much more depth to this wonderful franchise.

These gifted artists span a range of styles, genres and eras of popular music, but each has a uniquely fascinating and personal story to share of life spent in the shadows of superstardom. Wow. This will haunt me in my dreams. Powerful story.

An articulate and reverential documentary about the ironically considered "unsung" heroes of rock and roll. A film that truly threads the needle between the considerations of commerce and art with a heart that beats 4/4 in its chest. A treasure to watch and listen to!

This generous, fascinating documentary about the careers of backup singers, most of them African-American women, seeks to rewrite the history of pop music by focusing attention on voices at once marginal and vital.

In a film that's often sad but not without its triumphs, director Morgan Neville smartly explores the complex role that ego and self-promotion play in this profession.

I had never heard of the performers, but have apparently enjoyed their contributions thousands of times. Praise to the producer and director for their headliner contributors. I saw the film at the Minneapolis - St Paul film festival. Merry Clayton came to the screening and sang for us after the showing. That girl still has the pipes. The story about her audition with the Rollings Stones was a hoot. The soundtrack is wonderful. Lisa Fischer has an amazing voice - blew my socks off. Hope the movie comes to a theater near me, so I can hear it again. I thought the director did a wonderful job of balancing the contributions of the headliners with the life stories of the singers. It was a treat to hear them do their thing out in the spotlight.

This movie, simply just shows us how to live life. I am so happy to live in a time where the forgotten can be not only remembered, but celebrated and heard once again. A metaphor for all of us... We have to share our gifts, keep getting up when knocked down, and remember we can live until we are dead... I cannot wait to see what these ladies do with the rest of their lives and their careers. I am so happy to hear that some of them will have their catalogues re-released and even a sound track from the movie is going to be available soon. Glad to see The Weinstein company helping so that this Documentary can also be celebrated for the Oscar it is going to win next winter. Lisa Fisher and Darlene Love along with Tata Vega and Merry Clayton all carry this movie and then the very current struggle of the DIVA Currently struggling out of the back of the pack, Judith HIll are amazing.

Call Me Kuchu is a beautiful documentary that explores the struggles of the LGBT community in Uganda, a country where homophobia is rampant and violence against homosexuals is all too common. CMK is a story of courage and love. In the face of mounting physical threats, a few Ugandan's are willing to stand up for what they believe in, even if it means harm. While the film centers around the rights of the LGBT community in Uganda, the story's underlying dynamics are packed with parables that can be applied almost anywhere. Call Me Kuchu will more then likely leave you with tears, so I'd recommend bringing tissue into the theater.

Call Me Kuchu masterfully succeeds in opening the world of the previously closeted African LGBT community and is a riveting examination of the consequences of intolerance. Skillfully blending a highly personal journey into the lives of others with a journalist's overview of a world skewed by irrational fears and religious fervor, the film reveals how little has been learned from historical lessons of oppression. The central protagonist of the story, David Kato, becomes a lightning rod of attacks from American fundamentalist preachers and smug Nationalist homophobes. After he is bludgeoned to death in his bed, friends and family struggle with how, or even if, their fight for civil rights can continue. The parallels with other such battles are eerie, but the success of many of these past struggles leave the viewer hopeful that good will eventually triumph in this battle as well.

Call me Kuchu manages to simultaneously convey the horrific violence and injustice facing Uganda's LGBT community, and the resilient, lighthearted spirit of the individuals within it. The film's beautiful cinematography and skillful storytelling bring to light issues of poverty, fear, religion, and humanity. I continue to talk about this film with my friends and family since seeing it over a month ago. One of the best things you can do to combat the complicated and tragic circumstances that homosexuals face in Uganda, or for that matter in our own country, is to see this film and encourage others to do the same!

I had vaguely remembered that a gay activist had been killed in Uganda, but didn't realise until the event in the movie that this man, David Kato, who I had been getting to know and empathising with, was the same one.

But the movie does not dwell on his death, more on his life and struggle and that of those around him. His mother is a beautiful character.

I don't know which was worse, the smug, jokey newspaper editor (it's cheekily called the "Rolling Stone") who took no responsibility for any of the hatred he was stirring up or its consequences, or the smug local church people, or the smug, arrogant American evangelist, bringing American-style bigotry to Uganda.

The Anglican Bishop Christopher Senyonjo is a lovable respite from all this hatred, a Ugandan Desmond Tutu. The scenes at David's funeral, where he rescues the body from a local pastor who wanted to straighten out the LGBTI congregation, are very touching.

And yet, it's the same religion both he and the bigots are in the thrall of, and equally drives them both to do good or evil, almost at random, underlining Christopher Hitchen's catchphrase that religion poisons everything, and Steven Weinberg's, that for good people to do evil, that takes religion.

The courage of the local LGBTI people is amazing. We went through just a tiny fraction of that ordeal 26 years ago, and it seemed bad enough at the time. This movie and the dauntless people in it, packing up and moving on when their lives are endangered, and yet fronting up to courts, hostile crowds, policemen, clergy and thugs (sometimes the same people), will give heart to those who are still struggling.

Watch Stories We Tell (2013) Movie Online Putlocker,Watch Stories We Tell Putlocker Online Free,Watch Stories We Tell Megavideo Online Free,In this inspired, genre-twisting new film, Oscar (R)-nominated writer/director Sarah Polley discovers that the truth depends on who's telling it. Polley is both filmmaker and detective as she investigates the secrets kept by a family of storytellers. She playfully interviews and interrogates a cast of characters of varying reliability, eliciting refreshingly candid, yet mostly contradictory, answers to the same questions. As each relates their version of the family mythology, present-day recollections shift into nostalgia-tinged glimpses of their mother, who departed too soon, leaving a trail of unanswered questions. Polley unravels the paradoxes to reveal the essence of family: always complicated, warmly messy and fiercely loving. 'Stories We Tell'. A deeply personal story on reconstructing truths that will resonate with many. A brave and clever undertaking by Sarah Polley.

With her latest film, the emotional documentary "Stories We Tell," Sarah Polley takes a tour with more than its share of twists and turns through her complex family history(which are foreshadowed right from the start). Namely the focus is on all of the things that had to happen for her even to be born(as life imitates art which imitates life), which are simultaneously hugely important and not at all relevant, and by implication why you are not reading a review of "Kon-Tiki" right now. That story starts with the meeting of her parents, both stage actors.(Her father Michael is perhaps best known for his role in the television series "Slings and Arrows" which featured Sarah in season 3.) All of which works towards being a sort of cinematic seance in her trying to conjure the spirit of her mother Diane who died when she was only a child.

For the first time as a filmmaker, Ms. Polley turns the camera on herself, detailing her process which not only includes her father reading from his recollections but also the use of 8mm film for recreations that fit in seamlessly with home movies also seen here. The idea is to create as complete a picture as possible which includes input from as many people as possible, over one person's objections. Plus, Ms. Polley again includes references to the culture and history of her native Canada, which in this instance is the cultural differences between Toronto and Montreal which is different from what I would have supposed.

If "Stories We Tell" has a serious fault, it is that Ms. Polley does not really know how to end the film and ends up rambling a little bit. Of course, a story like this one really does not have an end...

She escapes from the camp with an older albino soldier and experiences for the very first time the joys of a peaceful and loving life, but a fresh tragedy will force her to confront and fight the ghosts haunting her mind. Although inspired by a real story that took place in Burma, Nguyen decided to film War Witch in the Democratic Republic of the Congo without giving a specific location to the plot. He worked on the film for 10 years, watching and catching children's points of view with his camera and mixing in tightly edited flashbacks in which the spirits of human beings appear with an ultra-realistic and violent storyline. A sensitive drama that deserves credit for exposing a disturbing real subject without trying to be shocking or melodramatic - and it finds a perfect balance between poetical mysticism and honest dramatic power, while surprising us with a delicate and involving love story.

A 12-year old girl is abducted from her African village by rebels and forced to become a child soldier; when her military commanders decide she has magical powers, she is declared the army's "war witch." A romantic subplot involving an albino magician and his quest for a white rooster briefly lightens this sad fairytale about the very real, very dark phenomenon of child military slavery.

It is astonishing that film that contains such violence can have such a serene tone. The source of the serenity is the measured, calm narration by Komona (voice of Diane Umawahoro) that is the telling of her story to her unborn child

An astonishing drama set in Africa that vividly depicts the courage and resiliency of a 12-year-old girl whose spiritual gifts enable her to survive.

Nguyen creates a mesmerizing tone through his camerawork, editing, sound and the infusion of African folk imagery and ritual, but it's Mwanza's performance as Komona that makes "War Witch" feel so miraculous.

Made with extremely clear-eyed restraint from harangues, sentiment, message-mongering, or anything else that would cheapen its central character's suffering and fight.

You're likely to ponder its images, its insights into a very foreign (for most of us) location and the tragic situation of Komona (and others like her) for a long time to come.

War Witch is most effective not when we are looking in on Komona but when we are inside her head.Canadian writer-director Kim Nguyen spent nearly a decade researching this docudrama about child soldiers in Africa, and the film feels as authoritative as a first-hand account.

This movie was interesting and engaging to me. Great look at her thoughts and intentions, as well as a less sympathetic but fair look at the hatred she garnered... this movie could have been great perhaps with a larger budget? All of the german actors were great, but the americans were god awful...

The film's point is made in the contrast of staunch stick-to-her-guns individual Hannah Arendt as against the personality-less bureaucratic Nazi official.

The film's most striking quality, and it's not insignificant, is director Margarethe von Trotta's refusal to fossilize the controversies she dramatizes.

The chick flick gets a magnificent makeover, so to speak, for something other than the usual sex and romance. Delving into the intellectual life of the defiant philosopher and provocative theorist of the 'banality of evil, as politically potent today.

Veteran German director Margarethe von Trotta has perhaps her strongest film to date with Hannah Arendt, yet another of her works about historically important women. Also notable is the superb cast led by Barbara Sukowa.

While it could easily be shorter and move a bit faster, especially at the beginning, it appears to move at a speed that's true to the heroine's thought process...If this portrait is true to Arendt, then let it stand.

Forceful portrayal by Sukowa humanizes an intellectual whose persona is remembered as grim as her philosophical observations. . . without her key controversial claims.

Sukowa, who is very appealing in some personal moments in the film, makes Arendt strong in a cool, logical, but humanly unrealistic position.

It's involving, as biopics go, but the shattering debates that still swirl around Arendt's view of the Holocaust are relegated to walk-ons.

A little wonder of a nature documentary, beautifully filmed and composed. Following a large variety of animals, some well known, some very obscure, through different stages of life: from the care for the offspring to the struggle for food or the search for mates. While we only get short glimpses into their respective lives, what we see and learn still fills us with a sense of wonder, leaving us in awe of the beauty of nature. Thankfully, the narration is limited to the very basic information, never gets preachy or too lyrical. Very well done. Impressive and memorable.

90% For this movie in its own class and genre. Lots of variety in little bits of BBC nature material from all over the world and different types of atmosphere. On cinema screen this is a lot better than on television.
It was a real pity firemen came and told us to leave the building 15 minutes prior to the end.

Four years in the making, this is simply a staggering achievement, with a standard of photography that continues Britain's excellence in the field of wildlife film-making.

This BBC Earth animal-behaviour doco catches the sheer jaw-dropping mentalness of the creature kingdom round the globe.

A typically eye-catching, years-in-the-making chronicle of animal life that is tainted by the urge to anthropomorphize.

Another gorgeously shot document of nature's majesty, this one focusing on the life cycle-and interconnectedness-of all living creatures.

A typical British nature documentary, which is to say, a very good film, and one that mostly balances the "awwws" with the awesome.

As much as Daniel Craig's narration can feel tacked-on, it's really secondary to the film's expert camerawork.

Beautifully shot and featuring some genuinely astonishing footage, this is a thoroughly entertaining documentary that delivers a powerful message.

One Life is a film truly deserving that much-abused adjective of unmissable.

Danish cargo ship, MV Rozen, is sailing through the Indian Ocean when a gang of Somali pirates seize the vessel. News quickly reaches the company offices in Copenhagen where the decision is made to bring in an outside adviser, Connor Julian (Porter), an Englishman with experience in dealing with pirates. Julian suggests the best course is to hire a professional negotiator but company C.E.O Peter Ludvigsen (Malling) ignores his advice and insists on handling matters himself. When an initial cash offer fails to satisfy the demands of the hijackers, the situation escalates.

Lindholm was responsible for writing duties on last year's excellent 'The Hunt', and here takes his sophomore directorial bow, proving himself something of a master of tense, yet realistic, drama. For a long time, Danish cinema was associated with the extravagances of film-makers like Lars Von Trier and Nicholas Winding Refn, but a new wave of gritty realism is sweeping the country's cinematic landscape. 'A Hijacking' is the first of two movies we'll see in 2013 dealing with this topic, as Paul Greengrass' Tom Hanks vehicle, 'Captain Phillips', is due later this summer. I'm not going out on much of a limb by theorizing Lindholm's film will be the more subtle of the two, as it's an underplayed, yet all the more tense for it, realistic piece of high drama.

It would have been all too easy to make the Peter character the villain and portray him as someone who cares more about the company coffers than the lives of his workers. Lindhom resists this, making Peter a reluctant hero. Malling is fantastic in the role, an actor with the ice cold exterior of a future Bond villain, and one I suspect we'll be seeing a lot more of, outside of his homeland. As the situation escalates from weeks to months, his calm exterior slowly and subtly breaks down; there are no Hollywood histrionics on display here. The entire ensemble are thoroughly convincing as real characters, dealing with a horrific scenario in their own unique ways.
'A Hijacking' is another quality piece of drama from a country punching above its weight.

A Hijacking (Kapringen) Danish semi-documentary film written and directed by Tobias Lindholm (scripter for The Hunt) . Lindholm has mentioned that his film critically analyzes the situations - he has made the movie for the corporations eager to handle such critical situations (which I have some objection toward). Film uses much of English language.

Somewhere in Indian Ocean Mumbai-bound Danish ship 'Rosen' has been captured by the Somali pirates with 7crew aboard the ship including central character the Cook Mikkel (Pilou Asbaek). Company CEO Peter has taken over the job to subdue or negotiate with the Somali pirates who have put US $15m demand however, Peter has offered just about US $0.9m over the past 4 months making the other seniors run out of patience with CEO's slow handling.

Film opens moderately the unique style of life aboard ship for the crewmembers. To keep the best atmosphere of thrill the music has been well composed - performance is brilliant.

Few things need to be discussed here so to give perspective view on Somali pirates. Back in 2009 when I had discussed this issue of piracy with my then engineering classmates from Somalia here in Pakistan, they told me that how they had adopted ways of being pirates after their coasts had come under foreign military occupation under UN mandate (especially US). He further told me that these Somali pirates were formerly fishermen who would fish to make both ends meet but since their business has been destroyed by the occupying forces some of them have chosen to teach them lesson in this way and so to earn as well.

Negotiating techniques used in the film actually seemed childish at some places. To say the least Somalia does not sit in European junction where you believe the cultural way of talking (that is best adopted in the Europe) should play well for you. For example, when Peter says to negotiator 'Don't play pressure game on me, I know you will not kill anybody' and in the next few seconds he hears the gunshot...now this should only ignite temper of the person you are talking in that tone - people of some parts of the world, cannot be taken for granted with the kind of gesture that you think might pluck out a kind 'consciousness' in them.

This analysis should not mean the film contains flaws and no soberness - it is extremely wonderful if you like pressure buildup movies and only of a kind on modern sea-piracy dominance in the Indian Ocean!

Directed by Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters) and featuring interviews and performances from the iconic musicians who recorded some of rock's greatest albums at the studio, Sound City doesn't just tell the story of this real-life rock 'n' roll shrine, it celebrates the human element of music as Grohl gathers some of rock's biggest artists to collaborate on a new album. Using Sound City's legendary analog console, together these artists continue to create musical miracles in a digital world.

Dave Grohl's directorial debut is a phenomenal documentary about the legendary Sound City Studios, a studio where some of the most legendary records in music history have recorded. Grohl interviews many musicians who have used the studio and they give their insight as to why Sound City was such an integral part in their creative process to create something memorable on tape. Sound City Studios was a studio that used analog recording equipment instead of digital to record its artists. No matter the genre of music you enjoy, this is a must see documentary that is truly impressive. The stories told by the musicians are wonderful. Grohl goes deep into the subject matter and give his film the human connection of making music with a band, and not simply a computer. Analog tape is an obsolete technology in terms of recording, and the film gives us an explanation as to why recording with tape is the best way to record music. Grohl gets his point across very well by stating that with tape, you can hear every little mistake and imperfection, which makes the music more real, while with digital you can easily fix it, tweak and perfect it, but at the same time cheapening the feel of the art form. With that being said, I have a profound respect for this dying form of recording and the stories are simply stunning. Dave Grohl interviews everyone from Mick Fleetwood to Stevie Nicks, Neil Young, and Lars Ulrich to producers Rick Rubin, Butch Vig and Ross Robinson. I've seen plenty of music documentaries, all of them were great, but Sound City is very different. This is a film not just about a studio, but the human element of creating real, pure music from the heart, something that most popular artists of today have forgotten all about. Everything nowadays is all about auto tuned vocals, electronic, computerized beats and not about playing an actual instrument. Sound City is a film that will delight music fans as well as those interested in this classic recording method.

There are few absolutes in this world. One is that the carcinogenic concoction that theaters drizzle over their popcorn is more addictive than anything Marlboro could produce. Another is that if a senior citizen is hit in the face with a shovel, chances are it will ruin their weekend. Finally, the last absolute is that most people respect Nirvana Drummer/ Foo Fighters front man Dave Grohl. Throughout his musical career he has churned out admirable hit after hit all while remaining convivial, self-deprecating, & perhaps most importantly, a total badass.

The subject of a recent documentary that was very popular at last year's South by Southwest, Grohl has now assembled a team of veteran filmmakers and turned the camera on the studio that helped launch his art into the ears of millions of fans the world over. This directorial turn begs the question, is Grohl as enchanting behind the camera as he is in front of it?

Sadly, I would have to answer in the negative as Grohl's love letter to Sound City Studio is a nice polished piece of entertainment, but a bit scatterbrained. Weaving together Grohl's personal journey with that of the studio itself, along with the myriad stars who all made iconic pieces of music within its walls, is already quite an undertaking. Yet, even with three main courses filling every inch of the plate, he attempts to squeeze in music's changing of the guard; the tumultuous change from analog to digital & the artistic devastation wrought in its wake. On top of this, he even throws in footage of his dream jam sessions with the likes of McCartney, Rick Springfield, and a slew of other musical prodigies.

All of this information is crammed into the running time of a standard-length documentary while the material could have filled a Shoah-length documentary. Not to mention it would have been a hell of a lot less depressing.

In an effort to juggle so much, Grohl inevitably drops the ball a couple of times. For instance, in telling the story of the switch to digital, a brief moment regarding Trent Reznor and his embrace of the digital format is awkwardly packed in; not doing that story any justice while simultaneously taking away from the film as a whole.

Overall, Sound City is chock full of energy and just being a fly on the wall watching these titans of the music industry create and refine music together makes the film worth a watch or two. Yet, for his sophomore effort, it might behoove Grohl to streamline his focus and allow the material to breathe a bit more.

He arrives on American shores eager for economic opportunities and new creative freedom, and he leaves having offended even the tolerant and open-minded as he pushes past the limits of propriety. He becomes a broadly appealing artist and Madison Avenue success story, a singular artist steeped in piquant ideas and thoughts, yet even his most recognized books are now out of print. While Ungerer is by no means a victim, he is an early casualty of the so-called cultural wars-a man who didn't fit neatly into the left or the right, and who managed to offend and fascinate people of all political and cultural persuasions. Once the most famous children's book author in America, Tomi Ungerer became persona non grata in this country, exiled to the professional abyss, never to be heard from again. (c) First Run

I can remember seeing Tomi Ungerer's childrens' tales even though I wasn't aware of Ungerer himself. His animation and slight subversiveness remain in one's mind into adulthood. The real Ungerer is a wonderful introvert who has such an interesting and compelling life history.

In Uganda, a new bill threatens to make homosexuality punishable by death. But no one, not even the filmmakers, is prepared for the brutal murder that shakes the movement to its core and sends shock waves around the world.

Visually stunning. The music is great. It gets your heart pumping and blood rushing.

It's strong just plainly on the aesthetic front.

Coupled with the storyline, it inspires one to live their lives fully, as most great films do!

Props to the editing for creating a nice balance of levity, gravity, and keeping me fully engaged.

Given it's documenterian genre, it really does shed some light on a surprisingly and unbelievably stunning situation occurring in the present time and age.

I definitely will see it again.

Storyline
The film is about two couples who meet as old friends and discover their lives are tainted by money, success, sex and children.

What tries to be an intense, cerebral drama turns out to be anything but in director Dan Mirvish's astonishingly terrible Between Us. If first impressions truly are everything, it appears someone forgot to give the memo to the director and cast, as the film opens with one of the most inexplicably irritating and unnatural dialogue sequences in contemporary film history. For those holding out hope…well…things don't get much better.

The story centres on two couples; once friends, but now heading in different directions- the offbeat artistic pairing of Carlo (Taye Diggs) and Grace (Julia Stiles) and the wealthy but unhappy Joel (David Harbour) and Sharyl (Melissa George).

No further synopsis can be provided, though, as the film proves to be utterly plot less right from the outset. The story intermittently jumps between key moments in these characters' lives, providing no valid linkages along the way, instead assuming that audiences will graciously accept multiple sudden breaks in an already disjointed film.

Each scene feels atrociously recycled, simply putting a different couple in the same troublesome situation. Naturally, this highly predictable fare becomes tired very quickly, as the film persistently fails to demand even the slightest sliver of viewer attention.

Writers Mirvish and Joe Hortua grossly mishandle any opportunities to develop their characters. All four individuals regularly flip-flop on decisions and established motives, giving a laughably embarrassing air to a film that takes itself far too seriously.

And yet, none of its aforementioned flaws can trump the disastrous overacting indulged in by each cast member. Harbour leads the pack, coming off as some sort of cringe worthy aberration of Modern Family's Phil Dunphy, with all of the social awkwardness and none of the charm, but make no mistake- the honour of 'worst actor' remains very much a four horse race, culminating in a soppy, borderline intelligence-insulting ending. Avoid with extreme prejudice.

Backup singers live in a world that lies just beyond the spotlight. Their voices bring harmony to the biggest bands in popular music, but we've had no idea these singers are or what lives they lead, until now.

The best film about the little known side of the recording industry, the backup singers. While all the stories are compelling, the one with the most impact is DARLENE LOVE. Her story is one that should be made into a movie of its own. Love the songs and I hope a soundtrack is released. Hearing Darlene sin 'Lean On Me' at the end of the film is classic. Don't miss it!

Between the welcome anecdotes, the wealth of archival footage, the well-polished production values and an inevitably remarkable soundtrack spanning the greatest decades of American rock and soul, Stardom mostly hits the right notes.

Twenty Feet From Stardom wages a compelling crusade to get background singers some long-overdue recognition.

'Wish You Were Here'. Suspenseful, extremely tense, and two powerful performances by Joel Edgerton [and especially] Felicity Price.

I was sold from the opening credits, with its colourful montage of Cambodia, oh-so-right music, and beautifully subtle, faded in title. One of the best openings I've seen in ages!

Then there's that car crash. It's really a measure of how much I'd invested, and the film had got me to invest in Felicity Price's Alice by this point. The dread of her getting pulled up by the police, the relief that she's got away with something, been given a chance after realising what she'd done, and then, before you know it, I suddenly braced myself, ducked my head, and felt the full impact of that crash, without even seeing it happen.

Gripping and tense drama with a trio of fantastic performances led by the Australian gem Joel Edgerton. Full review later.Wish You Were Here is further indication (after Animal Kingdom and The Square) that the Australian film industry is capable of telling thrilling contemporary stories with world-class dexterity.

Announcing its debut director Kieran Darcy-Smith as a talent to watch, this superbly crafted tale always roots its thrills in rich characterisation.Australian films rarely have difficultly looking good, and this one makes both Sydney and Cambodia look gorgeous and yet slightly menacing. For the most part, this is consistently strong and intriguing stuff, let down only by a seemingly rushed (or possibly ill-conceived?) final act.It is tightly plotted with a scary denouement that nails its point about the deadliness of rogue circumstance in a very satisfying way.Wish You Were Here may misjudge how to tell its story, but it remains a fascinating and highly relevant film.

Geoffrey Fletcher's directorial debut manages to be precious in a whole different way, sadly far-removed from the approach he took adapting the novel Push by Sapphire.

Violet & Daisy will just make you want to revisit "Hanna" again once it's over. Even with all of its crafty peculiarity and poignant sentimentality, Violet & Daisy is no Hanna.

An ambitious but not wholly successful directorial debut by the writer behind the Precious film.
Imagine a script by Quentin Tarantino, directed by Wes Anderson - and you have an idea of just how surprising this film can be.

While Bledel and Ronan are both fine, Fletcher doesn't allow us to get inside their minds to the extent required.Violet & Daisy has been saddled with a consistently underwhelming execution that inevitably drains all of the life and energy from the proceedings. The balance of naivete and insularly sweet exchanges are pleasing and comical but the film's painfully derivative.
